• What is the swine flu?
  The swine influenza A (H1N1) virus that has infected humans in the U.S. and Mexico is a novel influenza A virus that has not previously been identified in North America. This virus is resistant to the antiviral medications amantadine (Symmetrel) and rimantadine (Flumadine), but is sensitive to oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza). Investigations of these cases suggest that on-going human-to-human swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is occurring.


• 
  What are the symptoms of swine flu?
  Although uncomplicated influenza-like illness (fever, cough or sore throat) has been reported in many cases, mild respiratory illness (nasal congestion, rhinorrhea) without fever and occasional severe disease also has been reported. Other symptoms reported with swine influenza A virus infection include vomiting, diarrhea, myalgia, headache, chills, fatigue, and dyspnea. Conjunctivitis is rare, but has been reported. Severe disease (pneumonia, respiratory failure) and fatal outcomes have been reported with swine influenza A virus infection. The potential for exacerbation of underlying chronic medical conditions or invasive bacterial infection with swine influenza A virus infection should be considered.

  What is swine flu, and how is swine flu different from other kinds of flu? How does a person catch swine flu?
  Swine flu is a respiratory illness of pigs caused by infection with swine influenza A virus (SIV) that can occasionally affect humans. The disease first came to attention in 1976 with the death of an army recruit from swine flu. Widespread fear then led to an often-criticized mass inoculation program in the United States that resulted in illnesses and deaths.
  Symptoms of swine flu are similar to those caused by other influenza viruses. These include fever and chills, coughing, sore throat, and fatigue. Sometimes nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can occur. In the past, pneumonia and potentially fatal respiratory failure have been associated with human swine flu infections. It is not possible to distinguish swine flu from "regular" influenza on the basis of symptoms alone. The symptoms of swine flu can also vary in severity among affected individuals.
  Treatment for swine flu involves the use of antiviral medications begun as soon as possible after the onset of symptoms. There is no human vaccine to protect against swine flu, although vaccines are available to be given to pigs to prevent swine flu.
  In spring 2009, numerous cases of swine flu affecting humans were reported, first in San Diego, California. From 2005 up to this outbreak, only 12 cases of human swine flu were reported in the U.S., none of which resulted in death. Although many cases of swine influenza A virus infection occur in individuals who have had recent direct contact with pigs or close (within 6 feet) contact with pigs, human-to-human transmission has been documented for the 2009 swine flu outbreak. It is believed that this swine flu virus spreads through airborne particles containing the virus that are released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It is not possible to get swine flu from eating pork.

  When to seek medical care ?
  If you have flu-like symptoms and live in an area in which swine flu has been documented or suspected, contact your health-care practitioner. He or she will be able to advise you as to whether specialized testing for swine flu is advisable. If you develop severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, high fever, confusion or dizziness, severe vomiting, worsening of previous flu symptoms, or chest or abdominal pain, you should not wait to contact your doctor but should seek emergency medical care.

What can be considered as the world's sweetest mango is produced in the island province of Guimaras. While other countries have different varieties of the tropical mango (Mangifera indica), none of them tastes like the superbly delicious Guimaras mango, which is a variety of the popular Carabao Mango (Manginera indica).In 1995, the Guinness Book of World records listed the Carabao Mango as the sweetest fruit in the world. In the Philippines, mango ranks third among fruit crops in production, next to banana and pineapple. The country supplies mangoes to Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and recently the United States. In 1995, the Philippines produced 432,322 metric tons of mangoes, with an average production of 6.35 metric tons per hectare and 250 kilograms per tree from a total production area of 68,056 hectares.

World's Fastest Reader

ON JULY 17, 1968, Professor Florence Schale, Director for Rapid Reading Program of Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, told the whole world that her prize pupil established a score of 50,000 words per minute for the record books with one hundred percent comprehension in her final exams.

Prof. Schale's prize pupil was the "petite, smiling, warm and unassuming" 15-year old Maria Teresa Fabros Calderon from the Philippines.

In subsequent tests given by the University of Minnesota, the University of Illinois, the Purdue University and Northwestern University, Maritess reset the record books with her reading speed of 80,000 words per minute with 100 percent comprehension.

Newspapers across the world bannered her name, paid tribute to her exceptional ability, and gave her an honorific title: "World's Fastest Reader."

World's Largest Flower

In February 2002, an environmental organization discovered what could be one of the world's largest flowers in the 5,511-hectare Sibalom National Park in Antique province. The Guinness Book of World Records said: "The only leaf player in the world is in the Philippines". As a composer and lyricist, Celerio wrote more than 4,000 songs.

World's Largest Pearl

A Filipino diver discovered what is now described as the world's largest pearl in a giant Tridacna (mollusk) under the Palawan Sea in 1934. Known as the "Pearl of Lao-Tzu", the gem weighs 14 pounds and measures 9 ½ inches long and 5 ½ inches in diameter. As of May 1984, it was valued at US$75 million. It is believed to be 600 years old.

According to legend, the PEARL was cultivated in China by Lao Tzu using a small carved jade amulet with the faces of the ancient three friends, Buddha, Confucius and himself around 600 BC. The Pearl became a symbol of world peace by demonstrating that the three sages with differing views can live peacefully side by side in this magnificent PEARL. For centuries it was known as the PEARL of LAO TZU.A famous date in world history, the PEARL was rediscovered May 7, 1934 inside a Tridacna Clan by a Muslim tribe in the Philippines. The tribal chief renamed it the Pearl of God or the PEARL of ALLAH. This is documented with photos in Natural History, November 1939, the magazine of the American Museum of Natural History Certified as the World's Largest Pearl

Kangkong a food for poor ???

Before most of the Filipinos thought that Kangkong is a food for poor as it is basically a food they can only serve whenever they don’t have something to eat. But actually some of the known restaurants do have Kangkong to serve for their customers which added a new flavor and way of cooking. Here’s only example of the recipe you can do you your Kangkong.


Crispy Kangkong

Ingredients

2 bundles of Kangkong or roughly 1/4 kilo
2 beaten eggs
2 cups cold water
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
½ teaspoon refined salt
3 cups cornstarch
1 cup all-purpose flour
cooking oil

For Garlic-Mayonnaise Dip
Mix all of these below:

1 cup low fat mayonnaise
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 cup cottage cheese
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
dash of pepper

Procedure

1. Wash Kangkong leaves. Remove the leaves. Set aside stems for Adobo-kangkong.
2. Let the leaves dry.
3. Combine egg, cornstarch, flour, salt and pepper with cold water. Mix well.
4. Mix with kangkong leaves and stir until all the leaves are coated with the batter.
5. Heat cooking oil in a frying pan. Dip the leaves in oil and fry until crispy. Drain the oil of the fried leaves on paper towel .
6. Serve with Garlic- Mayonnaise Dip
